Ministry requests AOTM opinion about insulin infusion pumps

The Health Ministry on 10 February asked the Health Technology Assessment Agency (AOTM) for a recommendation regarding a proposal to extend the scope of state reimbursement of the cost of insulin infusion pumps, the ministry spokesman Piotr Olechno told Rynek Zdrowia. The Agency has to take an official view within 30 days.
Since 2009, partial reimbursement is available only for persons aged up to 18, but there are concerns that this makes insulin pumps prohibitively expensive for diabetic patients who remain in education after turning 18. Therefore, the Ministry is considering to lift the age ceiling to 26 years (provided that the young person stays in education). Based on the AOTM’s recommendation, the Ministry will decide on whether to amend a relevant ordinance. The change has the backing of the patients’ ombudsman and patient groups.
