Apothecary Council demands probe into AstraZeneca’s new DTP scheme
2010-03-09
The Supreme Apothecary Council (NRA) has called on the Main Pharmaceutical Inspectorate (GIF) to launch an official probe into
AstraZeneca’s modified direct-to-pharmacy (DTP) scheme, to assess its consequences for the pharmacy market. The letter was prompted by reports that AstraZeneca closed down its wholesale facility in Poland and began supplying the
Polish pharmacy market from the UK effective from 1 March. The Council also asked the GIF to grant it the status of a party to the investigation, on the grounds that it represents the public interest.
According to NRA president Grzegorz Kucharewicz, available information suggests that the change is confined to a change of wholesaler and has done nothing to alter the fundamental nature of the system.
Last year the GIF concluded that the system – introduced in May 2009 - failed to ensure equal access to AstraZeneca's medicines for all pharmacies and wholesalers in Poland and ordered the company to bring it into line with the Pharmaceutical Act as regards equal access.
