Teva grows in Russia after buying Ratiopharm

As a result of the acquisition of the German medication producer Ratiopharm by the Israeli company Teva Pharmaceuticals, the latter could become one of the three largest producers of generic medicines in Russia. According to Farmexpert, in Q2 2010 Teva was the fourth-largest manufacturer of generic drugs in the country, while in 2009 it was the sixth-largest.
The transaction means that Teva's portfolio in Russia now comprises 140 medicines. By 2012 the producer is expected to launch further 30 new drugs on the Russian pharmaceutical market.
Teva plans to invest up to $100m (€78m) in its Russian plant and to reach full-cycle production capacity by 2014.
According to Aleksandr Bykov, Teva's director for government and external relations, it is possible that the company’s revenues reach $1bn (€780m) by 2015. He estimates that the Russian pharma market will grow by an average of more than 10% annually and expects this to be the case during the next few years.
