20% of hospitals evaluated negatively by GIS in 2009

Every fifth Polish hospital was evaluated negatively in terms of sanitary and technical conditions in 2009, according to a report published by the General Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS). GIS inspected technical and sanitary conditions in 806 hospitals out of the total 817 units under its supervision, which means that 98.7% of the units were inspected.

Out of the inspected pool, the sanitary and technical state of 22%, so 179 hospitals, was found to be unsatisfactory – an increase on the 163 hospitals given unsatisfactory grades in 2008. GIS found that hospitals are slow in adopting regulations pertaining to sanitary requirements in effect as of 10 November 2006.

The main charges related to inappropriate conditions of walls, ceilings and floors, as well as ill-equipped toilets and bathrooms, e.g. lack of soap containers and paper towels. The rooms were found to be too small and not suitable for the needs of the disabled.
GIS also noted the need to regulate the conditions of the local sterilisation units, as out of the 104 hospitals checked in this scope, 11 were evaluated negatively.
