Bulgarian Ministry of Health cuts emergency care payments

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health transferred 50% less funds to emergency clinics nationwide in August. The Ministry explained that a high percentage of patients admitted via emergency care units were in fact non-emergency cases, such as respiratory infections, cuts and insect bites. According to the Ministry, such ailments should be attended to by GP's. In response, emergency care staff has protested that a diagnostic examination always needs to be carried out to assess the seriousness of each case, and the Ministry is contractually obliged to pay BGN 20 (€10.22) per each patient examined.
