Hospital debt rises in Q2
2010-09-08
The total debt of public healthcare entities (including long-term debt) stood at just under PLN 9.93bn (€2.5bn) at the end of June, according to latest data released by the Health Ministry. This represents an increase of 0.8% compared with three months earlier, and is 2.9% higher than in the same period a year ago.
Enforceable debt increased at a faster rate during the three months to June, rising by 4.2% compared with January-March, to PLN 2.52bn (€636m). (But in Q1 it surged by 7.8% q-o-q). On a yearly basis, enforceable debt was a 8.9% higher.
The aggregate figures mask considerable differences between voivodships. In some regions, namely Mazowieckie, Podlaskie, Swietokrzyskie and Wielkopolskie, the value of total debt increased by around 5% q-o-q or more in Q2. In Swietokrzyskie, as well as in Kujawsko-Pomorskie, the yearly increase in total debt was in the double digits (low teens) over this period. On the other hand, in five voivodships total debt fell on a yearly basis, and in six it was lower q-o-q.
As for legally enforceable debt, Swietokrzyskie was again one of the worst performers, with debt rising by over 50% y-o-y and more than 10% versus Q1. Hospitals in Lubuskie and Pomorskie cut their enforceable debt in both annual and quarterly terms in Q2.
