More information about Polish pharmaceutical market can be found in: and in PMR pharma market reports: Private healthcare market Poland 2010 In 2009 the Polish private healthcare market was worth PLN 27.9bn (€6.4bn), up by ca. 8% on 2008, according to the report by PMR, entitled “Private healthcare market in Poland 2010”. Despite the economic crisis, which has impeded the rate of growth on the medical subscriptions market in Poland, the leading private medical companies developed their outpatient and inpatient medical services rapidly in 2009. The phenomenon of opening hospitals was new at that time – in the past, those who led the field in sales of medical subscriptions did not operate their own hospitals. Clinical trials Poland 2010 The clinical trials market in Poland slowed in 2009, in comparison with previous years. Between 2006 and 2008, it grew at a rate of 8-10% per annum, whereas 2009 saw a year-on-year increase of only 1%, according to the report entitled “Clinical trials in Poland 2010”. PMR forecasts that in 2010 the market will expand by around 5% year on year and will be worth PLN 718m (€170m). Distribution on the pharmaceutical market in Poland 2010 According to the report “Distribution on the pharmaceutical market in Poland 2010”, during the period 2008-2009 the pharmaceutical distribution sector in Poland saw further consolidation, both among distributors and among retailers. The most important event in the wholesale distribution segment was the buyout of Prosper by Torfarm, another leading distributor on the Polish market, in April 2009. After the fusion, the two companies together control more than 30% of the market of distribution to pharmacies in Poland. In vitro diagnostics market in Poland 2010 According to estimates, contained in PMR’s report “In vitro diagnostics market in Poland 2010” in 2009 the IVD (in vitro diagnostics) market was worth more than PLN 1bn (€246m). During the current year, the rate of growth on the market will slow down as a result of increased difficulties faced by the National Health Fund (the NFZ). These are certain to have an adverse affect on the funding of healthcare benefits. However, given the wide range of market growth factors, PMR forecasts that the IVD market will see a high CAGR, of around 10% between 2009 and 2012, of the order of almost PLN 1.4bn (€320m). Biotechnological innovations in the pharmaceutical industry in Poland 2009 In the last two years pharmaceutical biotechnology industry in Poland has seen a significant reduction in the annual rate of sales growth, according to the PMR report “Biotechnological innovations in the pharmaceutical industry in Poland 2009”. According to PMR estimates, in 2008 the industry’s revenues suffered as a result of a deterioration in the performance of Bioton, the largest Polish biotech company. It was estimated that, in 2008, biotech companies in the Polish pharmaceutical industry achieved combined sales worth PLN 607m (€173m), around 2% less than the 2007 figure. Nevertheless, in future years, despite the uncongenial economic situation, the market will grow at several percent per year, and in 2011 sales should improve by almost 30% year on year. This will be a consequence of the development of innovative projects which are, today, at the inception or start-up stage and are not yet yielding a return. Pharmaceutical and healthcare market in Poland 2009 In 2008 the pharmaceutical market in Poland was worth PLN 24.1bn (€6.9bn), representing an 11.5% increase in comparison with 2007, according to the PMR report, “Pharmaceutical and healthcare market in Poland 2009”. The financial crisis does not seem to have had an impact on the pharma market in Poland in 2008. Furthermore, 2008 was one of the best years for the pharmaceutical industry in the past decade, in part because of high GDP growth and related increases in the purchasing power of Polish consumers. Non-refunded OTC products, with dietary supplements at the helm, drove market growth. As a consequence, in 2008 OTC products already represented 34% of the overall pharmacy market in Poland, whereas in 2005 they accounted for around 30%. Close to half of 2008 market value was, however, generated by sales of prescription preparations subject to reimbursement. Dietary supplements market in Poland 2009 In 2006 and 2007 Poland noted impressive, more than 6%, GDP growth, thanks to which Poles could afford to purchase more luxury goods, including dietary supplements. This is also why the entire dietary supplements market in Poland expanded by over 30% year on year in 2007 and in 2008—by close to a quarter. Because of lower GDP growth forecasts for 2009 and 2010, PMR also expects lower growth in sales of dietary supplements. Between 2009 and 2011 annual market growth will oscillate in the neighbourhood of 12–15%, according to report, “Dietary supplements market in Poland 2009”. PMR forecasts are based on an assessment of the impact of the global financial crisis on the Polish market and of the consequences of the upcoming regulatory changes (relating to borderline products).
